Tanuki Sunset is developed by Rewind Games / Bromio and published by Digerati. It is available on PC, Xbox, Playstation, and Nintendo Switch. It was released on October, 14, 2019 and is available for $14.99.

A staple genre in gaming is the “endless runner”. Tanuki Sunset is a delightful take on this genre with all of the features you come to expect. You can choose to rip down the winding road at high speeds or make your descent a casual one all while dodging obstacles and pulling off a few tricks. You get to play as Tanuki, a longboarding raccoon with goals of getting on the cover of their favorite longboarding magazine.

The game starts off easy enough with few mechanics but there is a nice amount of depth. As you advance through the levels, additional unique obstacles will appear on the road giving more chances to rack up points while raising the difficulty. Between each level you can head back to a cozy skateboard shop and this acts as a hub for all of your customization options. You can unlock customization options for characters and skate decks.

The thing that makes Tanuki Sunset stand out is the art direction; a gentle mix of synthwave, lo-fi and the skateboarding scene. The game always has me bopping along to the soundtrack while I’m sending it down the road, drifting around corners and landing tricks. I personally love the arcade feel the game has, allowing you to load it up and play with ease.

I feel that Tanuki Sunset can sit right next to classic arcade racers like Road Fighter. If you’re looking for a fun and engaging arcade game, this is definitely one to pick up.
